School Probes Are Unfair

This is a comment written by Mr. Liong Kam Chong, a former colleague when we were together as PKs in our respective SMK in Negeri Sembilan during the middle of 90s. He had served as the head of the education resource and technology unit at the NS education department before he left to do a master at a local university. He was promoted as a PK in a SMK in Seremban district upon his return from his study and barely a year or two later we lost touch as he was promoted as a principal to a reputable secondary school in Seremban town till his retirement a few years back and I left to attend a one-year headship course at IAB, Genting Highlands
(because we used to meet during our regular sessions of official meetings as PKs). Mr. Liong was the brain behind a state education department program in formulating school time table using a computer software program adopted from Singapore. Indeed I have benefited a lot from this program in which my rural school was among the earliest has used the software to build and formulate my school time table and in many of my daily school administration works. In fact he has unselfishly took the trouble and his time to coach me step by step, the first time, in building the time table.

I notice Mr. Liong is a regular contributor of comments and suggestions on education issues to the two of our main English dailies after his retirement, namely the New Straits Times and The Star. He has given many insightful, logical, out of the box, practical, etc. comments or suggestions through the dailies which I believe the education authority has taken note some of his comments and suggestions. Prior to this I have posted one his comments in this blog and I would like to add in his latest comment and suggestion regarding school rules and regulations in relation to discipline matters in schools for us to ponder. The comment was published in The Star, Tuesday, 28 December 2010, page N45, VIEWS.

Schools have rules and regulations to help prevent, contain, control and curb indiscipline among their students. Yet, students disciplinary problems continue to hound school authorities, district education offices (DEO), state education departments (SED) and the Education Ministry.

Every now and then, "shocking" cases of student indiscipline are revealed. It is also believed that many other cases are covered up. We are right to ask: "Has the handling of discipline cases by the schools thus far been effective and efficient?"

Perhaps the following concerns merit consideration. Every time an indiscipline case in school surface, we will hear of the Education Ministry asking for a report from the SED which in turn will direct the DEO to prepare the report. The DEO in turn asks the school to submit a report.

So, it is the school head who will finally write the report which is then "posted" upwards. The DEO may send an official to visit the school to hear out the headmaster and the parties concerned. But, it is the report from the school head that is final and official.

This practice raises an interesting question: Can we really believe that a school head would compose a report that is detrimental to his/her own position as head and may also hurt the image of his/her school?

Granted that a head is honest enough to give all the facts revolving around an indiscipline case, the causes and consequences of the case are subjective and can be "manipulated" to the advantage of the school authorities. And that is the report that will reach all the way to the top. No wonder, then, that in most indiscipline cases, the school is usually absolved of any wrong doing.

I think that all schools should have an ad hoc panel comprising representatives, such as from the school's PTA, the alumni association, police personnel, an official from the DEO and representative from the school office. This panel should be responsible for investigating and reporting on all indiscipline cases. Such panels will give school heads a new perspective in solving school disciplinary problems.

Also, we often hear that the number of students involved in indiscipline cases is only a minor proportion of the total number of students. Similarly, the percentage of schools involved is minimal compared with the total number of schools. These statistics are often misused to paint a rosy picture of indiscipline in schools.

The former director-general of education, Tan Sri Dr. Wan Zahid Mohammad, advocated "zero-defect" when he helmed the ministry. Perhaps our schools, DEOs and SEDs should heed this advice.

Schools, DEOs and SEDs are also quick to declare that a particular case is resolved and the file closed. It is this attitude that breeds and condones negligence and the accommodative "live and let live" attitude.

Let the New Year bring a fresh and bold approach to school discipline by all concerned stakeholders.

MANCHESTER, Dec 24 — Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin Van der Sar looks likely to retire at the end of the season, manager Alex Ferguson said yesterday.

The 40-year-old Dutch keeper’s retirement has been on the cards for some time and United have been preparing to have to fill some big boots by bringing in Dane Anders Lindegaard, who will be registered with the club early next month.

“We’re planning for it to be possibly Edwin’s last season,” Ferguson told a news conference.

Oil Prices > US$91, On The Way To US$100?

Oil jumps to highest since 2008 crisis

December 24, 2010

NEW YORK, Dec 24 — Oil surged above US$91 (RM282) a barrel to its highest price in more than two years yesterday, as Opec member Libya’s apparent lack of concern over prices prompted some analysts to call for a new year’s run at US$100.

With crude reaching back-to-back 26-month highs, ultra-cold weather stoking demand and depleting US stockpiles at the fastest pace in 12 years, traders are now looking for the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries to signal when it might begin pumping more crude.

New Set of Nilai Murni?

I am putting on this post, may be quite sarcastic after reading some articles or statements through various source of media or observing the behaviour of our political and public service leaders.

It seems all those nilai murni (good virtues) we are doing our best to be imparted into our children mind and behaviour through our school's system would not go far and doom to be failed. This is because new set of nilai-nilai murni are now the order of the day. The most prominent one is lying. Next is abuse of power, third is vanity, follow by hypocrisy, envy, vindictive, victimizing, lording, disguising and kiasuing. One may add in more of these equivalent values.

Obviously these values are being practice by most of our so called leaders or people whom our children are looking at or engaging with whether they are from our top political and government leaders to the basic organization in our school system.

Perhaps our hard working and good-hearted teachers can immortalized these new values into our children mind through a series of ritual activities equivalent to praying as what they are doing in the Pendidikan Moral (moral education) lessons, so that they can be unconsciously practicing them without knowing it.

Looking at the trend, we are actually at it and at the fast tract. We are observing that these values are the gateway to successful life or earthly heaven and become the new virtues of humanity.

The real good values and behaviours one is taught through one's religious belief seem to be the unrealistic values which seem to bring one to no way and to be the real victim of the present emphasis of the false self realization.

An Opinion On A 'Kiasu' State

This is a part of the article written by Tunku Abdul Aziz that I have excerpted from Malaysia Today. Click here to read more.

.....

A Singaporean behaves too much like an insecure lover, forever seeking assurance that she is the fairest of them all and that she is much admired and loved. The insatiable craving for praise and adoration would, in normal circumstances, point to a serious flaw in the national character. How else can you explain their supercilious behaviour towards us, the Japanese and Indians, all falling into the category of “stupid?”

Singapore is not an unknown quantity to us in Malaysia. In a sense it is of us, but not part of us. Forget the so-called historical ties that are supposed to underpin our relations because they amount to nothing in practice.

To view them through rose-tinted spectacles as is our wont would distort even further a relationship that has never been known for its convergence of views on even the most pedestrian of issues. Rather, it has always had all the makings and attributes of a potentially protracted and acrimonious future.

Singapore has no time for sentiments; emotion is anathema to its national make-up. So, do not use that tack because it simply will not wash with it. Singapore is brutally clinical and rarely takes prisoners in any engagement with it.

Being small is not always easy, especially when you are trying to flex your muscles and punch above your weight. To be constantly reminded that you are nothing more than a little red dot on the face of the earth as President B.J. Habibi of Indonesia once did, somewhat insensitively, must touch some raw nerves, especially for a country that can justifiably claim a string of successes on so many fronts.

Crabs Below Pulling Down A Crab Wants To Climb Up!

I came across the following tale from a blog where the author says many of us are familiar with it. The purpose of the author in putting up the tale was to describe the leadership tussle in a leading political party in the country. The tale runs as follow;

There are two crab vendors selling the crustaceans from a basket. You will quickly notice the baskets. The Malay seller has an open basket. The Chinese covers his basket with a lid.

The Malay crab seller has no worries about his crabs escaping. So he sells his crabs from an open basket. The Chinese seller on the other hand, worries if he doesn't cover his basket with a lid, his crabs will escape.

Why the difference? Well, the crabs in the Malay basket will never be able to escape. Because at any time any crab wants to climb up, the crabs below will pull it down. The Chinese on the other hand continues to worry. Because if anyone crab wants to climb over, the crabs below it will help push it up.

Well, I find the moral of the tale is degrading and it has no justification to compare the attitude of the two major races in country by such behaviour of the crabs. I believe it is more on the deep prejudice of our society which we have inherited since the beginning of the modern history of the country.

In fact there is no different between the Chinese and the Malays, even with other races when we are talking about the issue of climbing up the ladder of success or leadership. Just look at the history of each communal parties in the country and you will find that each of them has that behaviour of the crabs at the bottom pulling down any crab that wants to climb up. It is not only in politic but in many of our undertaking in our daily life. It is the matter of envy and jealousy. It is a part of human nature and it does not confine to one particular race. Therefore the tale should be thrown away.

No Development Funds For Opposition's Constituencies Which Also Means 'Discriminate' Your Own Supporters

by Americk Sidhu

... You see, a government is formed by the party with the most number of seats in Federal Parliament. That’s your party. There are other seats occupied by Malaysians representing other Malaysians who did not vote for your party but nevertheless are entitled to the same benefits of those Malaysians who did.

This is what a ‘democracy’ is all about. This means you get elected by a majority of the people to run the country for everyone. You are an employee of the people and I mean ALL the people and not just the ones who voted for you.

Part of your job is to be entrusted with the country’s coffers. Everyone contributes to these coffers, not just the people who voted for you.

Therefore you are running a government whose funds come from both your supporters and the supporters of the opposition. This is because everyone, unfortunately, has to pay taxes ...

Then you will now begin to appreciate that the money you have been entrusted with belongs not to you or your mates but to everyone in the country. It is not your personal money. It is the rakyat's money. It belongs to every Malaysian, even those who chose not to vote for your gang.

Therefore when you spend OUR money, you cannot be selective. If you feel you are able to allocate some funds for the betterment of the average citizen’s welfare, you must consider all citizens. You cannot select a few citizens to benefit from your misguided generosity based not on need but on your own whims and fancies. That is not the way things are supposed to work.

Otherwise it would be called ‘discrimination’, (or even bribery).

Using your own logic, what are those people who voted for your party in the last elections going to feel because they are caught in a constituency in which the opposition candidate got more votes and because of that they are being left out?

Do you think by ‘punishing’ those who voted for the opposition (and in so doing punishing your own supporters), will necessarily mean more votes for you next time around? Is that your logic?

Well, try this. Give everyone the benefit of development funds and perhaps everyone will vote for you next time. Or are you just simply unable to think outside the box?

Enter World's Hottest Chili Pepper

Fri Dec 3, 11:38 am ET

Fiery food mavens seeking to one-up each other now have to gear up for a whole new test of culinary bravado: the world's hottest chili pepper.

Yes, the Naga Viper, the latest claimant to the world's-hottest-pepper crown, outdistances its predecessor, the Bhut Jolokia, or "ghost chili," by more than 300,000 points on the famous Scoville scale of tongue-scorching chili hotness. Researchers at Warwick University testing the Naga Viper found that it measures 1,359,000 on the Scoville scale, which rates heat by tracking the presence of a chemical compound. In comparison, most varieties of jalapeño peppers measure in the 2,500 to 5,000 range -- milder than the Naga Viper by a factor of 270.

You might think the Naga Viper would hail from some part of the world with a strong demand for spicy food, such as India or Mexico. But the new pepper is actually the handiwork of Gerald Fowler, a British chili farmer and pub owner, who crossed three of the hottest peppers known to man -- including the Bhut Jolokia -- to create his Frankenstein-monster chili.

Jangan Menyamai Dakwaan Yahudi "Sebagai Bangsa Terpilih" - Dr. Asri

NONE“Mungkin seseorang diberikan keistimewaan disebabkan faktor kekurangannya ataupun kelebihannya.

China Passenger Train Hits 300 mph, Breaks Record

Fri Dec 3, 4:18 am ET

BEIJING – A Chinese passenger train hit a record speed of 302 miles per hour (486 kilometers per hour) Friday during a test run of a yet-to-be opened link between Beijing and Shanghai, state media said.

The Xinhua News Agency said it was the fastest speed recorded by an unmodified conventional commercial train. Other types of trains in other countries have traveled faster.

A specially modified French TGV train reached 357.2 mph (574.8 kph) during a 2007 test, while a Japanese magnetically levitated train sped to 361 mph (581 kph) in 2003.

State television footage showed the sleek white train whipping past green farm fields in eastern China. It reached the top speed on a segment of the 824-mile (1,318-kilometer) -long line between Zaozhuang city in Shandong province and Bengbu city in Anhui province, Xinhua said.

View About 'Supremacy'

This is a view from a reader excerpted from Malaysiakini.

Harrisman:
I don't understand how this controversy of the 'supremacy' of the Malays has to do with the sultans or Malay rulers. The sultans are the sultans of all races. I am Chinese and I have a lot reverence for my sultan, the Sultan of Selangor, and I have my utmost respect for His Majesty. His Majesty is a hardworking sultan and he has the interest of all his subjects at heart.

So, I don't see how this issue of Malay supremacy could jeopardise the institution of the sultan. A sultan is a sultan of all races, not just the Malays.

The same goes for our Agong. His Majesty is the Agong of all races. Our sultans and our Agong will forever be a Malay. I don't see a Chinese or Indian who can be Agong. The issue is really moot.

Comment: Even the non-Malays feel very proud and hold dearly to awards or medals bestowed by the Malay rulers. They willingly wear the Malay costume and the songkok to receive the awards from the rulers.

Blue Moon?

The full moon of November arrives on this Sunday (Nov. 21, 2010) and will bring with it a cosmic addition: It will also be a so-called "blue moon."

"But wait a minute," you might ask. "Isn't a 'blue moon' defined as the second full moon that occurs during a calendar month? Sunday's full moon falls on Nov. 21 and it will be the only full moon in November 2010. So how can it be a 'blue' moon?"

Indeed, November's full moon is blue moon – but only if we follow a rule that's now somewhat obscure.

2. When in doubt, just take the next small step.
3. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone.

21. Burn the candles, use the nice sheets, wear the fancy lingerie. Don't save it for a special occasion. Today is special.
22. Over prepare, then go with the flow.
23. Be eccentric now. Don't wait for old age to wear purple.
24. The most important sex organ is the brain.
25. No one is in charge of your happiness but you.
26. Frame every so-called disaster with these words 'In five years, will this matter?'
27. Always choose life.
28. Forgive everyone everything.
29. What other people think of you is none of your business.
30. Time heals almost everything. Give time time.
31. However good or bad a situation is, it will change.
32. Don't take yourself so seriously. No one else does.
33. Believe in miracles.
34. God loves you because of who God is, not because of anything you did or didn't do.
35. Don't audit life. Show up and make the most of it now.
36. Growing old beats the alternative -- dying young.
37. Your children get only one childhood.
38. All that truly matters in the end is that you loved.
39. Get outside every day. Miracles are waiting everywhere.
40. If we all threw our problems in a pile and saw everyone else's, we'd grab ours back.
41. Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need.
42. The best is yet to come...
43. No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up.
44. Yield.
45. Life isn't tied with a bow, but it's still a gift.

A Planet Has Been Found!

by Jean-Louis Santini Jean-louis Santini Thu Nov 18, 3:41 pm ET

WASHINGTON (AFP) – A hot, gaseous and fast-spinning planet has been found orbiting a dying star on the edge of the Milky Way, in the first such discovery of a planet from outside our galaxy, scientists said Thursday.

This artist's impression shows HIP 13044 b, an exoplanet orbiting a
star that entered our galaxy.

Slightly larger than the size of Jupiter, the largest in our solar system, the newly discovered exoplanet is orbiting a star 2,000 light years from Earth that has found its way into the Milky Way.
The pair are believed to be part of the Helmi stream, a group of stars that remains after its mini-galaxy was devoured by the Milky Way some six to nine billion years ago, said the study in Science Express.
