Penang – Not So Chinese After All



GEORGE TOWN: Malays and Chinese account for 82% of the state’s estimated 1.61 million population in the latest statistics made available to the public here.

According to the statistics made available through the Socio-Economic and Environmental Research Institute (SERI) think-tank, Malays account for about 40% of the population base while Chinese represent 42% in the ethnicity demographics.

There is not much difference in the population growth between the diverse ethnic backgrounds in Penang since 2006.

In 2006, Penang’s population base was 1.49 million and it has grown steadily to 1.61million in the past five years.
